Cat
Lesson: to say what something is.
English: It is a cat.
Irish: Is cat é.
The predicate here gives the category to which the subject belongs.
Irish use Is for these types of sentence. Though Is is translated as Is(English verb to be), there is a great difference in how Is(Irish copula), and Is(English verb to be) are used.
1. Is(copula) 2. cat(predicate) 3. é (he/it - subject)
Therefore:
Is cat é.
Is madadh é.
Is fear é.
Is bean í.
