An tAsal agus an Bia.

The Donkey and the Thistles

Gaeilge

An tAsal agus an Bia.

Bhí asal agus bhí ciseán ar a mhuin,
agus bhí an ciseán lán de bhia mhaith,
faoi choinne na bhfear a bhí ag obair sa ghort
ar an taobh thall den bhaile.

Ag cur an bhóthair de don asal, chonaic sé
feochadán breá glas borb i leith taoíbh an
bhóthair, agus chrom sé ar é dh'ithe.
Nuair a chuaigh blas cumhra an fheóchadáin
suas ina chogansach rinne sé a mhachnamh
mar seo.

"Is greanmhar an scéal é," ar seisean.
"Is iomaí bia fónta agam sa chiseán seo thiar
ar mo mhuin, agus is mór é dúil na bhfear ann.
Ach am briathar go mb'fhearr liom féin an
feóchadán seo ná é."

Béarla

The Ass Eating Thistles

A donkey, laden with choice provisions of
several sorts, was on his way to the field.
His master and the reapers were at work there,
and the provision he carried was for the
refreshment of both man and beast.

Seeing a large strong thistle by the roadside,
and being very hungry, he stopped and began
to munch it. While he was doing this, he thought
to himself:

“Many people would be surprised — with such
dainty food upon my back — that I do not touch it.But to me this bitter, prickly thistle is more
savory and relishing than anything else in the
world. Let others choose what they will, but give me a fine juicy thistle like this, and I shall be content. Every one to his taste.”
